Welcome to Design My Shaadi’s Planner’s Corner

Welcome one and all to the Design My Shaadi Planner’s corner! We are a resource for South Asians to create, share and “design” ideas for their special events. Our goal is to walk side-by-side with you through the often confusing but exciting process of wedding planning, so that you’ll have a virtual consultant the whole way through. We will be updating our blog with featured events, vendors and new trends for the season. If that’s not enough, our in-house planner will be posting some planning tips, as well as answering your questions!  We hope to make this an interactive resource for the community, and we welcome all of your comments and questions!  Happy planning!

Three Weddings and a Lifetime of Happiness

Usually one wedding ceremony can be enough to plan for. Now imagine planning three. Can you feel the stress? Wait a minute…let’s throw in a wrench in the system. Plan three wedding ceremonies in the same day and a RECEPTION to follow! All that can be imagined is chaos…Except for one couple.  Meet Anna and Vivek, who were in such a situation, and ended up having not one, not two, but THREE  amazing wedding ceremonies and a fabulous reception.  These included a South Asian, Western, and a Chinese Tea ceremony!  Their dreams and ideas coupled with the vendors listed below called for combination that couldn’t be beat. A special thanks to Melissa Diep Photography for the images provided.

It’s the happiest day of your life when you announce to your family that you’re engaged! You had the most romantic proposal you could imagine and you are way too excited to start planning the wedding. If you’ve been dreaming of this day when you first got with your fiancé, you probably have a date already set in mind! You know exactly what you want, where you want it and how you want it. But wait, don’t get ahead of yourself. It’s not going to be all your way, you will have both side of families giving suggestions on the details and who to invite, all out of excitement.

Groomzilla?

Contributed by Hima Dasika-Dewdrop Special Events, New York, NY

Picture this:  Your boyfriend just popped the question.  The surreal feeling of being engaged is starting to sink in and you smile at the thought that you will get to plan your wedding exactly as you dreamed since you were a little girl.  Your vision is clear: you have your heart set on your wedding venue, can picture the décor and color scheme, know what type of food you would like to serve, and have already picked out your DJ and wedding favors.   And then to a complete surprise, your fiancé mentions that he would prefer live music to a DJ.  You are in complete shock because you’ve always heard that the groom usually prefers to be left out in wedding planning.   But you find that your fiancé has opinions…strong opinions…and he’s not afraid to voice them.  All of a sudden there are too many chefs in the kitchen!  What do you do?

Not Just Any Cake but a CUPCake!

Brides and Grooms to be!

Bored with standard cake designs? Tired of cakes with Henna Styles or Paisley Patterns? Looking for something different and more in line with your unique style?  Design My Shaadi is always ready to help and we’ve got the solutions for you…Cupcakes!

Cupcakes are a great way to create a unique style to your wedding theme.  Besides being neat and easy to serve, you can choose multiple types of cupcakes so that you cater to multiple guests needs.  You can also get creative with the cupcake displays. Some brides opt for traditional multi-layer cake stands with a small top tier of sheet cake for you to freeze and save for your first anniversary.  Cupcakes can be a great party favor as well (or midnight snack for your guests!).

In short…consider using cupcakes as a unique feature of your wedding.

Surviving Wedding Planning 101

Brides and grooms to-be – are you having a hard time feeling the love during this very stressful planning process? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Almost every couple feels the strain during this time.  There are a couple factors that contribute to this –

  1. That you are planning a large event together and trying to appease each other as well as each others’ families.
  2. Getting married is a stressful time; people are ultra-sensitive in their relationships in the weeks and months leading up to the wedding. Putting this much of a strain on a relationship really stretches beyond your normal comfort zone.

Just know that you are not alone and try to spend some quality time with each other and remember WHY you are getting married. Try some small, thoughtful gestures every once in a while to keep the spark alive. Find ways to make an exciting event out of things like getting your marriage license, going for your engagement photo shoot, etc. When you find yourself bickering about something small like where the DJ table is going to be, try to think about the true importance of winning this battle. Besides, who remembers where their DJ table was a year after the wedding?

Send your fiancé a nice note today and see how it lights up his or her day!

Happy planning!

Take the Day Off…It’s Valentine’s Day!

With it being Valentine’s Day today, we want to remind all of our couples and followers to take a moment and remember the small moments in life that have mattered the most to your relationship. Remember the first time you saw her? Or the first time he sent over flowers? The first movie you saw together? The first time you laughed at each other or with each other?

Once wedding planning is in full swing, it’s almost impossible to find time to take a breather and be with the one you love (outside of wedding planning of course!). Wedding ceremonies and celebrations end after a few days, while marriages can last a lifetime. You can lose sight of this point throughout the many hours, days, weeks, and months you spend on planning your event. So we at Design My Shaadi are saying, “Take the Day Off-It’s Valentine’s Day”. Today is the day that there will be no planning done. Tell the planner to call back tomorrow. Tell the florist to make sure they make their deliveries today. The only venue you need to think about is which restaurant you’re going to and the only menu will be the one for tonight’s dinner.

Whatever way you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day, we at Design My Shaadi hope you enjoy it. Happy Valentine’s Day and we’ll be back to wedding tips and coverage tomorrow!
